The many fungi that live on honeydew are all called sooty mold, such as Cladosporium and Alternaria that live on honeydew, the excess sugar secreted by aphids. Sooty mold forms a layer of fungus on the leaf but does not affect the leaf. The fungus blocks sunlight, which can ultimately lead to reduced growth.
Where to find

Prevent aphids from from settling on the plant, shrub or tree: natural enemies include: birds, ladybirds, earwigs, parasitoid wasps and lacewings. Nasturtium (trap crop) captures aphids away; aromatic herbs such as southernwood, lavender and aphids confuse aphids.
