Scarlet elf cup (Sarcoscypha coccinea). The scarlet elf cup can be found in winter and early spring on mossed and decayed wood. Mostly in deciduous forests, gardens and parks with moist, nutrient-rich soil.
Scarlet elf cups are between one and five cm in size. On the thin, two cm stem is the cup shaped cap. Initially the calyx is almost closed, the inside of the calyx is bright red. The scarlet elf cup has a strong odor.
The scarlet elfcup (Sarcoscypha austriaca) occurs in the same places and in the same numbers as the scarlet elf cup – only with the help of a microscope can the two be distinguished from each other.
