Rose rust (Phragmidium mucronatum). This fungus causes the brown-black fungal spots on the leaves of roses in autumn and winter. In summer, the fungal spores are orange-brown. If the fungus is seriously infested, the leaves will fall off prematurely and new shoots will die.
The fungus hibernates on the fallen leaves.
Rose rust is related to violet bramble rust (Phragmidium violaceum).
