Phoma leaf spot (Phoma betae) is a fungal disease that attacks young spinach and beetroot, causing them to collapse and die. When infested, the stem turns a glassy brown and the plants become limp or fall over. The leaf can also be affected: large, bright, round spots with dark, concentric rings appear on the leaf. Dead leaves often become brittle.
The fungi survive in the soil.
