Oak bark beetle Scolytus intricatus. Bark beetles live between the bark and trunk of a tree. Larvae drill holes in the bark and make a large burrow in the soft, living wood. They live off the sap flow. The sawdust (drill dust) is worked out. Each species of bark beetles has its own specific pattern of tunnels.
The tunnel system disrupts the tree’s water absorption; dehydration weakens the tree and eventually kills it.
