Leaf and pod spot (broad bean) (Didymella fabae). This fungus causes large, gray circles on the leaves. As the pods grow, spots with dark brown centers develop on the surface. Once the stem is affected, the plant dies. Fruit can be affected both externally and internally. Internally affected fruits have deteriorated to brown pulp.

Where to find

  • Broad bean

Control

In horticulture, leaf and pod spot is controlled with biological means. This is not possible in the vegetable garden or allotment.

Prevention

Sow the broad beans in well-drained soil and give these a fertilizer that is not too nitrogen-rich. Make sure there is enough space between the beans (wind). Keep the beans weed-free.
Removing flowers on still young plants prevents internal fruit rot. Do not sow the broad beans in the same spot the following season. Rotate crops to ensure at least four legume-free years.
