Celeriac (Apium graveolens var. rapaceum). Related to (leaf) celery. This light germinator is best sown in pots in a greenhouse or on the warm window sill in March. Transplant in the vegetable garden as soon as the plantlets have four or five leaves. Difficult to grow; buying young plants from a garden center skips the tricky germination process. Water regularly to prevent dehydration.
Bugs
Pierced roots, tunnels and rust-colored streaks on the root: carrot fly (Chamaepsila rosae).
Fungi & diseases
Brownish-yellow spots on leaves, leaves withered: Septoria blight (Septoria).
