Fill a plastic bucket like for wall paint from DIY store and fill it with beer. Fermenting beer attracts snails and slugs. Only fill the bucket with a small layer of beer: too much beer will drown the snails and slugs. Effective, but less friendly. With a little beer, the snails and slugs hang drunk in the bucket and can easily be moved to places where they can do no damage. You don’t have to make a beer trap yourself; ready-made beer traps are commercially available.
The disadvantage of the beer trap is that several have to be placed in the garden to be really effective.
