Aspergillus is a genus of over two hundred species of fungi found throughout the world. This threadlike fungus can be found, for example, on corn and in hay.
Aspergillus thrives in an oxygen-rich environment (aerobic). These molds grow on the surface of plants and fruits.
Aspergillus niger is responsible for black mold on fruits and vegetables (onions, walnuts, grapes).
Affected plants
- Fruits and vegetables
Control
Infestation to fruits is irreversible.
Prevention
Store fruits in a dry environment.
For example: pick up fallen walnuts as soon as possible. The longer they lie in damp grass, the greater the chance of mold forming. Remove the husks and put them to dry.
